The Surrey Hills are set to be the scene of some Olympics cycling action next year, with the county expected to be part of an imminent announcement on the road race route for the 2012 Games.
It is anticipated that both the men’s 150-mile race and women’s 80-mile trek will start in Westminster, before heading through south-west London and Surrey and then back into the capital for a finish at Buckingham Palace.
And it is hoped that some 800,000 people could descend on the county next summer to watch the medal-seeking cyclists in action.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games has so far refused to reveal any official details but admitted an announcement would be made in the next few weeks.
Locations picked out for the opening stages of the route were reported to be Putney, Richmond and Hampton Court, before the cyclists go on to cross the M25 at Leatherhead.
More than one ascent of Box Hill is on the cards, then on to Headley and Dorking, west along the A25 to Shere, and finally back towards London taking in Byfleet and Weybridge.
Councillor James Friend, leader of Mole Valley District Council, commented: "Clearly we are hoping there will be major benefits at the time, with people coming to visit our wonderful landscapes and going to our shops.
"Places like Denbies [Wine Estate] and the National Trust sites I am sure will get an increase in visitors. And we hope that people will come out into Surrey as the months and years go by."
It is expected these benefits will more than outweigh the inconvenience of some of the area’s major routes being closed for the races.
Rick Parish, president of the Dorking Chamber of Commerce, said: "The number of tourists expected to be headed into the Surrey area is mind-blowing.
"It’s going to have a major impact on congestion and hotel space, but it will be fantastic to have an Olympic event here."
