England Finds 2012 Olympics Don’t Spur Exercise

At Spyns we are pretty active, you really need to know how to more when running with the bulls in Pamplona www.pamplona-spain.com. We also run tours for Tour de France www.tdf-tours.com so enjoy all sports. If you would like to be another one of our happy clients, we invite you to come with us to London in 2012 and experience what it is like to be given the Spyns experience.

When London was awarded the 2012 Olympics, organizers promised an ambitious legacy: to get two million more people in England involved in sports and physical activity.
But with the Games in less than 18 months, that commitment now resembles a wheezing jogger, bent over and winded from a New Year’s resolution whose ambition could not be matched by exertion.
London’s original pledge evolved into a plan to get one million more people around England playing sports three or more times a week for at least 30 minutes at a time, known as the 3x30 plan. Even that target is proving elusive.
Figures issued in December by Sport England, the governing body for community sports, indicated that participation at the 3x30 level had increased by 123,000 since 2007-8, when the one million baseline was established. But that number increased by only 8,000 in the last year. At the current rate, the goal of one million new participants would not be reached in 2012-13 as hoped but more than a decade later in 2023-24.
Meanwhile, in a country that is among the fattest in Europe, the number of couch potatoes apparently continues to grow. Surveys by Sport England indicate that the number of adults doing zero moderate sports activity rose by nearly 300,000 from 2005, when London was awarded the Olympics, to the fall of 2010.
Inadequate planning, a change in government, severe funding cutbacks to sports organizations and an apparent overestimation of the impact the Olympics can have on mass participation have all forced a rethinking of England’s Olympic legacy.
The latest plan, unveiled in November by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government, omitted the one million target figure. It spoke instead of encouraging more people to take up sports through Places People Play, a program sponsored by the National Lottery.
“We haven’t yet dropped the target, but we’re looking at it fairly carefully,” Hugh Robertson, Britain’s minister for sport and the Olympics, said in a telephone interview.
What is needed is a more sensible way to define and measure sports and physical activity, Mr. Robertson and other sports experts said. Does walking to the bus stop count? If someone plays a pickup soccer match for 90 minutes, does that count as one sporting session or three?
Anecdotal evidence suggests that more people participate in sports than surveys reveal, Mr. Robertson said. But, he added, measuring participation involves a “slightly clunky mechanism.”
All Olympic bids are required to show how the Games will provide lasting benefits. Each city is allowed to devise a legacy plan. There are no specific penalties for failing to reach a target, but the fallout can undermine the reputation of a particular Winter or Summer Games and bring political opprobrium.
Some critics have accused Mr. Robertson of watering down London’s post-Olympic ambitions. He replied, “That’s emphatically what we’re not trying to do.”
Darryl Seibel, a spokesman for the British Olympic Association, said sports and government officials were determined to leave a meaningful legacy from the London Games and to transform plans “from rhetoric to reality.”
London is hardly the first host city to struggle with its Olympic legacy. In truth, international events like the Olympics and soccer’s World Cup leave a greater discernible impact on infrastructure than on sports. Roads, airports and rail systems are improved while a number of stadiums become white elephants and lingering sporting benefits remain indistinct.
Six years after Albertville, France, hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics, the figure-skating arena and speed-skating oval there were fenced off and abandoned. The magnificent Olympic stadium showcased during the 2008 Beijing Games, known as the Bird’s Nest, was seldom being used a year and a half later.
In London, there has been heated debate about whether its $854 million Olympic Stadium should be demolished after 17 days’ use and replaced with a soccer stadium or downsized and left as an arena that could host both soccer and track and field. The second option prevailed Friday in a vote by the company in charge of the Games’ legacy.
Research on the Olympic Games stimulating mass participation in sports has not produced encouraging results. In 2007, the Culture, Media and Sport Committee of the British House of Commons concluded that “no host country has yet been able to demonstrate a direct benefit from the Olympic Games in the form of a lasting increase in participation.”
A study of the 2000 Sydney Games showed that while seven Olympic sports experienced a slight increase afterward in Australia, nine showed a decline.
After the 2002 Commonwealth Games, held in Manchester, England, “there appears to have been no recorded impact on sports participation levels” in the country’s northwest, Fred Coalter, a professor of sports studies at the University of Stirling in Scotland, wrote before London won the 2012 Olympic bid.

Longer pub hours and no council staff leave during Olympic Games

At Spyns, we are getting excited about the Olympics. London will come alive, with an expected 2million people coming to town the council is looking at extending pub hours and public transport. The city will be a buzz as the largest series of planned events starts. Spyns has a luxury adventure for everyone with 5, 7, and 10 day tours available from opening to close.
Pubs and restaurants in central London could be open for longer hours during the Olympics.
Westminster council said today it would consider longer licences and announced public transport operating hours will also be extended.
The council, which will host many Olympic events, has ordered a ban on key staff holiday during the summer of next year.
It may also draft in key council staff from Manchester with experience of the 2002 Commonwealth Games to cope with demand.
Westminster set out its plans to cover 100 days in the summer of 2012 when it will play host to the largest series of planned events in its history.
These include the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the World Pride Parade which take place before the Olympics and Notting Hill Carnival between the Olympics and Paralympics. Westminster will play a pivotal role in the success of the Games, expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors including the International Olympics Committee who will be staying in Park Lane.
It will host the Olympic torch relay, beach volleyball at Horse Guards Parade, archery at Lord's and Olympic and Paralympic road events such as marathon and cycling.
Transport for London is extending public transport operating hours for those returning from events.
Councillor Angela Harvey said: "We will need to strike an appropriate balance between the needs of the Games themselves; helping Westminster businesses to maximise the opportunity which the Olympics present; and supporting the wider Westminster residential and business communities to get the best out of the Games."
All building work now under way is due to be complete by the 100 days.

UK Officials crank down on ticket touts. Will you have orginal tickets?

Tickets for the general public are yet to go on sale, but already the UK officials have cranked down on 100+ fake websites and are trying to send a strong warning to ticket touts. At Spyns, we are talking with official ticket distributers in all four corners for the world to ensure our Olympic Games clients get not only original tickets, but get seats in one of the 30 different venues in use.
Ticket touts were warned today they could be issued with ASBOs banning them from 2012 Olympic venues, police said today.
Scotland Yard warned it was planning to use a range of tactics against touts and fraudsters planning to cash in on the multi-million pound Olympic economy next year.
Police have launched a specialist fraud unit called Operation Podium to disrupt organised crime gangs plotting to target the 2012 Games. So far 37 people have been arrested and the unit has 16 ongoing operations targeting organised ticket crime.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Downing, who leads the squad, said: "We believe that touts who are targeting events like Glastonbury and the FA Cup will also be targeting 2012 and our strategy is to send a message to them that we are coming after them with every tactic we possess.
"We will consider using ASBOs to ban ticket touts from all Olympic venues and we are also using the Proceeds of Crime Act to take poelpe's money off them. If we cannot prosecute touts for an offence we will go after them and disrupt them in other ways. We want to make it a very challenging environment for fraudsters and touts."
So far, police have run 10 operations against organised gangs involved in money laundering, e-crime, fraud and bespoke ticketing crime.
The unit's priority is preventing fraud around the launch of the Olympic ticket sales next month.
Some 8.8 million Olympic tickets worth £500million will go on the market, with three quarters of them being sold to the public.
Police fear criminals may try and launch false websites and manufacture counterfeit tickets.
The squad disrupted one Wolverhampton crime gang which was planning to flood the Olympic economy with counterfeit cheques.
So far many of the scams are not directly related to the Olympics but police say there is increasing intelligence that crime groups intend to target the 2012 Games.
Last month it emerged that more than 100 websites posing as ticket suppliers for the London Olympics had been shut down.
In another case, detectives uncovered a ring of fraudsters targeting suppliers of high cost goods, including champagne and laptops.
The gang claimed to be arranging corporate hospitality events and ordered luxury goods from suppliers and requested delivery to the address of a "virtual office."
Arrangements were made at the office for the goods to be signed for, by the reception staff, on delivery. They were then immediately collected by courier.

Olympic stadium: Don't betray the legacy of London's Games

Spyns clients have been looking into our 5, 7, and 10 day tours focusing on Opening and Closing ceremonies, Swimming, Athletics, Basket ball, and Beach Volleyball. The Olympic Stadium has a maximum capacity of 80,000 but will have 30,000 removable chairs so after the games it can be converted for other purposes.
As West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur football clubs fight over who will take over the main arena it would be wise to remember why we won the Games in the first place.
London was awarded the 2012 Olympic Games because the city's bidding team promised a legacy – for athletics and for east London.

Whether those promises are kept depends in part on a vote by the board of the Olympic Park Legacy Company. Members will consider rival bids by West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur football clubs to take over the main stadium after the games. A crucial difference between the offers is that West Ham would preserve the arena, complete with running track, and modify it to suit the needs of a football stadium. Spurs would demolish it and build something more fundamentally soccer-friendly.

Most football fans agree that athletics lanes spoil their view. Spurs says it would compensate runners by investing in athletics infrastructure in Crystal Palace. But removing the track from east London would be a clear breach of the commitment to make the Olympic park "a purpose-built home for athletics for generations to come".

Spurs' main backer is US entertainment giant AEG, which has its eyes on the site as a concert venue. West Ham has event company Live Nation on board for similar reasons, but also has financial support from Newham council, the local borough. That local connection is vital. The Tottenham bid is commercially punchier – who pays to see athletics these days? – but it is also mercenary. Whoever takes over the site will inherit fabulous infrastructure and transport links, funded by the taxpayer. The decision about who should benefit must be about more than commerce. It is easy to see why AEG would like a piece of that action, and why it makes sense for them to make Spurs the vehicle. But

Tottenham is a place, not a brand. Its football club shouldn't be uprooted to chase a nice little earner for the proprietors.

Meanwhile, the promise was of an Olympic legacy for athletics and for east London, which presumably extends to its historic sporting institutions. Only one bid passes that test.

Ian Thorpe Olympic comeback. Will he be there?

www.london-olympiad.com

Spyns clients will be interested to know Ian Thorpe is eying up an Olympic come back. With Micheal Phelps a favourite needing some competition it could make the Games interesting.
MOMENTS after ending speculation about his own future, London Olympic aspirant Geoff Huegill hoped he had also helped Ian Thorpe make up his mind about a swimming comeback.
Huegill, 31, confirmed yesterday that he had the 2012 Games in his sights after making a stunning return to the pool. His well-documented ''from flab to fab'' comeback was one of the great feel-good stories - and he hopes to add another chapter at his third Olympics.
But Huegill also wants another former world champion by his side next year. ''Absolutely. I hope I have ignited a fire in his [Thorpe's] belly,'' said the champion butterflyer. ''Hopefully he will swim on and want to be a relay swimmer [at London].''
Thorpe has been spotted training in Sydney and been in close contact with national head coach Leigh Nugent in recent months, adding to speculation he may return after his 2006 retirement. Huegill believed Thorpe's return would push the sometimes maligned Australian men's swimming team to greater heights before London.
The men began to answer their critics with an encouraging display at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
However, they were still overshadowed by their female teammates who claimed 16 of Australia's 22 gold medals in the pool.
''A swimmer of his talent will lift the spirits of the swim team two or three notches,'' Huegill said of Thorpe. ''And it [Thorpe's return] would definitely make those younger kids look over their shoulder which ultimately means they have to swim faster if they are going to secure their spot [on the Games team].
''That's one of the best things about a guy like him lurking around in the background - I am just grateful he doesn't do butterfly.''
Thorpe has not yet applied to return to drug testing - something he must do nine months before he intends to compete. He would have to apply by June if he wanted to be eligible to compete at next year's London Olympic trials.
The men's team has had its share of critics - especially when a 31-year-old Huegill and possibly Thorpe, 28, are needed to bolster its ranks. But Huegill defended his team's depth.
''After having an amazing men's team that we had in 2000, it was always going to be hard for the younger guys to fill those shoes,'' he said. ''But one of the most exciting things is that none of the positions in the team is a dead certainty - you still have to fight for your spot.''
Huegill admitted it would have been ''very easy'' to walk away after his Delhi success that included two gold and a silver. But Huegill admitted he would be kicking himself if he hadn't rated his comeback against the ultimate gauge in London - American superstar Michael Phelps.
''I know this is going to be my opportunity to take on the best in the world like Michael Phelps,'' he said. ''I don't want to waste this opportunity that I have got.''

London 2012 Olympics faces increased cyber attack threat, Spyns clients have no trouble

Buying tickets could be dangerous for the Olympic Games 2012. With many sites selling fake tickets; Spyns clients are happy to know Ryan King (President) has been in London doing the ground work and has secured the best tickets from the legitimate sellers for 2012.
London Olympic organisers say the threat of cyber attacks has increased since the Beijing Games. Photograph: Leon Neal/AFP/Getty Images
London Olympics organisers today warned of the increased danger of cyber attacks that could fatally undermine the technical network that supports everything from recording world records to relaying results to commentators.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog) said it was "inevitable" that its systems would have to repel malicious attempts by hackers to bring them down.
Unveiling a new lab that will run simulations of millions of scenarios at venues with 200,000 hours of testing ahead of 2012, Locog chief information officer Gerry Pennell said the threat had increased since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
"It's clear that cyber security is rising up the agenda in this country and others. We're taking it very seriously. It consumes a significant proportion of my time," he said.
Patrick Adiba, the chief executive of Locog's IT partner Atos Origin Iberia, said that during the Beijing Olympics there were 14m "events" a day, about 400 of which were "relevant events that could have been an issue that may have impacted on the Games". All of them were blocked, he said.
"We will get cyber attacks, for sure. We are working very closely with our partners and with government to make sure we have got the right level of defences against cyber attacks," added Pennell.
"It would be where typically a malicious group launches an attack with a view to bringing down the Games itself or the website. Those kind of malicious attacks you can imagine people attempting to try."
In December last year, a government security review of the Olympics overseen by Lady Neville-Jones warned that "the need for a strengthened approach in mitigating the risks of cyber threats was identified".
It said an action plan was being developed by the Office of Cyber Security to address the threat.

Olympic cyclists heading for Surrey Hills in 2012?

Spyns primary adventures started with cycling tours as Ryan King (President) is a huge cyclist and Tour de France enthusiast. Therefore cycling is a massive interest of the company and its employees. I’m sure our clients will be interested to watch the endearing 150-mile men’s and 80-mile women’s trek finishing at Buckingham Palace. If you would like to be a VIP Olympic guest and be given a 110% quality tour that you will never forget, check out our website and chat with Ryan about our luxurious packages. http://www.spyns.com/. Read on for more information about the Olympic Organising Committee’s potential cycling route.
The Surrey Hills are set to be the scene of some Olympics cycling action next year, with the county expected to be part of an imminent announcement on the road race route for the 2012 Games.
It is anticipated that both the men’s 150-mile race and women’s 80-mile trek will start in Westminster, before heading through south-west London and Surrey and then back into the capital for a finish at Buckingham Palace.
And it is hoped that some 800,000 people could descend on the county next summer to watch the medal-seeking cyclists in action.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games has so far refused to reveal any official details but admitted an announcement would be made in the next few weeks.
Locations picked out for the opening stages of the route were reported to be Putney, Richmond and Hampton Court, before the cyclists go on to cross the M25 at Leatherhead.
More than one ascent of Box Hill is on the cards, then on to Headley and Dorking, west along the A25 to Shere, and finally back towards London taking in Byfleet and Weybridge.
Councillor James Friend, leader of Mole Valley District Council, commented: "Clearly we are hoping there will be major benefits at the time, with people coming to visit our wonderful landscapes and going to our shops.
"Places like Denbies [Wine Estate] and the National Trust sites I am sure will get an increase in visitors. And we hope that people will come out into Surrey as the months and years go by."
It is expected these benefits will more than outweigh the inconvenience of some of the area’s major routes being closed for the races.
Rick Parish, president of the Dorking Chamber of Commerce, said: "The number of tourists expected to be headed into the Surrey area is mind-blowing.
"It’s going to have a major impact on congestion and hotel space, but it will be fantastic to have an Olympic event here."

Will you be able to get Olympic tickets in 2012? Tickets go on sale in March

Spyns president Ryan King is in London as we speak making sure our clients have only the best seats and hotel suites in London. Tickets will go on sale in mid March for general tickets and be a ballot system. With high demand for tickets before they have even been printed, chances for hopeful Olympic goers could be slim.
Sports fans will have six weeks -- from March 15 to April 26 -- to apply for the 6.6 million public tickets.
They can apply at any time in that period because it is not a first come, first served process. Any oversubscribed events will be allocated by ballot after the deadline.
"On 15 March, the application process opens to be part of the greatest show on earth," said Coe, a former middle distance champion who twice won Olympic gold for Britain in the 1500 metres.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the world's greatest athletes going for gold in the UK -- a chance for people to see their favourite sport and perhaps try a new one."
Tickets for the London Paralympics will go on sale on September 9 after prices are announced in May, he added.
Two million people so far have registered an interest in buying tickets for the Olympics, which are priced from 20 pounds to as much as 725 pounds for the showpiece 100 metres athletic final.

Trends for 2011: London and the Olympic Games

PR trend for 2011L London and the Olympics
PR trend for 2011L London and the Olympics

With the start of the Olympic Games more than 18 months away, the money making machine that is the Olympics will start to dominate PR as we get closer to the Opening Ceremony. Spyns clients, past, present, and future will be happy to know Ryan King (Spyns President) is in London this week securing the best hotel suites and picking out the best seats in Olympic Stadium, ahead of the PR caravan.

Scott Bowers, group director of comms at The Jockey Club, agrees: 'Brands, organisations and causes will try to "own" London in 2011, placing a stake in the ground before London 2012, especially competitors of Olympic sponsors.'
The challenge for brands that are not official sponsors is to negotiate the restrictions surrounding their involvement in the event. While non-sponsors cannot claim to be associated with the Olympics, there is nothing to stop them taking 'ownership' of London as a city.
33 Digital's Drew Benvie says the smart brands will be looking to start conversations about the issues affecting London: 'Forward planning is really important. If you are searching online for London and a particular service, brands want to be those that come up top. We are going to see a lot of websites changing the way they structure their content, and we are going to see social networks focusing on London as a community.'
As the event itself draws closer, Bell Pottinger's Kevin Read predicts: 'There will be opportunities particularly for brands that might be associated with bringing people to the capital for an experience, such as airlines and the hospitality industry. They will be furiously working at giving London a new coat of paint.'
But as Lansons' Tony Langham warns, the challenge for brands and for London as a whole is to make sure the Olympic fever does not peak too early and begin to generate cynicism.

Will Michael Phelps be the best in 2012?

Spyns clients are excited to have pool side seats reserved to see their favourite swimmer Michael Phelps in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Critics comment on Phelps' recent performances and with Australian 6 time gold medallist Ian Thorpe looking to make a comeback, Michael title could be under pressure.
AUSTIN, Texas — Michael Phelps' 2010 ended with the echoes of his coach saying he'd been surpassed as the best swimmer in the world.
So welcome to 2011, when Phelps tries to shut out his subpar year and start preparing for the 2012 Olympics.
Phelps said Thursday he's putting aside all distractions, including his budding golf game, to start preparing for the world championships later this year and the London Olympics.
Everything starts Friday when he gets in the pool at the Austin Grand Prix at the University of Texas where he'll swim six events over three days.
Phelps will race five times against Ryan Lochte, who got the best of him at last year's national championships and dominated the short-course world championships to emerge as Phelps' chief rival for London.
"Just getting in here and getting some races under my belt is the No. 1 step. Training could be better, could be worse. I'm starting to feel a little bit better in the water. Being able to feel the water is going to better in a racing environment, especially with some the guys here I'll be able to race against."
Guys like Lochte, who beat Phelps in the 200 individual medley and the 200 backstroke at the national championships. Lochte set the only two individual world records last year and won all five individual races he entered at the short course championships.
Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, said he looking at the Grand Prix races as training for Phelps, not necessarily competition with Lochte.
"Michael's traditionally got a lot out of swimming and racing hard in meets," Bowman said. 'He comes out of it and trains a lot better when we get home. I'm looking forward to that."
Bowman pursed his lips when reminded of his comment last year that Phelps was not the best swimmer in the world in 2010.
"I'm always trying to push him ... that's why I said that," Bowman said. "But when you look at what he's done already, he's the greatest of all time even if he walks out the door and never takes another stroke. For him to even be here is a plus. To be in here with some goals and even motivated to swim fast, is even better."
Bowman has started counting down the days to the Olympic trials and reminds Phelps regularly that the weeks are starting to fly by.
"It's going to be here before we know it," Phelps said. "Everybody knows it's time to start focusing, buckling down and getting ready for it. It's hard to believe Beijing was 2 years ago."
Phelps said he has yet to set an event schedule for what he expects to swim at the 2012 Olympics.
Phelps picked a good place to kick-start his Olympic drive. The Texas pool is where he set his first world record in the 200 butterfly in 2001 when he was 15 years old.
As soon as they walked in the building, swimmer and coach looked to make sure Phelps' name and time of 1 minute, 54.92 seconds were still on the board of pool records.
"This is kind of where it all started," Phelps said.
Other swimmers have questioned if in fact Phelps does have anything left to prove after winning 14 career Olympic gold medals, including his incredible haul of eight in 2008.
"If I didn't have goals I wouldn't have come back and gone another four years," Phelps said. "There's still things in this sport I want to accomplish and I know how hard that's going to be."
As for that golf game he loves so much? Those clubs will lucky to get a peek out of the closet for the next 18 months.
"We'll retire the clubs for a little bit while we get back on track with swimming. I have my whole life to golf and try to master that sport," Phelps said. "The clock is running out and it's time to put all the focus on one thing."

London 2012 Olympics: ticketing plan whips up sailing storm

Organisers of the London Olympics have been criticised for failing to consult people in Weymouth and Portland over controversial plans to turn a public park into a ticketed venue, with spectators paying up to £55 to watch the sailing events next year.

Weymouth - Olympic chiefs spark anger over sailing proposal for London 2012
Spyns clients are looking forward to an action packed Olympic Games. With all the confusion floating around finding tickets and securing hotels, our clients are glad to have piece of mind knowing that we have taken care of it for them. Here is an artical I found about Englands controversial plans for their sailing venue. Enjoy!!!!!

A close competition: spectators will be able to watch Olympic sailing events from the Weymouth shore
The 2012 Games will be the first in Olympic history to charge fans to watch sailing races, with temporary seating being provided for up to 4,600 paying customers in Nothe Gardens, a Weymouth beauty sport popular among dog-walkers and picnickers that overlooks one of the racing areas at Newton’s Cove.
But members of Weymouth and Portland Council said they received official notification about the plan only a week before Christmas — more than two months after the London organising committee, Locog, announced the ticket prices for the Games, including sailing.
The council’s first opportunity to debate the plan was last week at its management committee meeting.
Liberal Democrat councillor John Birtwistle, whose ward includes the council-owned Nothe Gardens, said it had not occurred to Locog to speak to residents and park-users about the plan. “Locog don’t seem to see any need to talk to local people,” he said. “They made no attempt hitherto to tell us what they want. “They may have told council officers, but they certainly haven’t told the people or the elected councillors.”
Tory councillor Roger Allen, who represents the same ward, said many residents were furious about the loss of a popular amenity during the Games.
Locog has defended its decision to sell tickets on the grounds that, for the first time, sailing will be presented as a true onshore spectator experience — something the International Sailing Federation is keen to develop. The organisers also cite safety concerns, with a ticketed venue allowing them to predict crowd numbers. They insist the move is not motivated by financial gain.
For those unwilling to pay, there will still be one or two free vantage points near Newton’s Cove as well a free site with a giant screen and stage on Weymouth Beach.
The sailing competitions will take place on five courses but only at Newtons Cove will spectators be able to watch from land with the naked eye. Tickets, which will go on sale in March, will range from £20 for preliminary races to £55 for medal races, though discounts will be available for children and over-60s.
Locog said councillors were invited to a meeting about Nothe Gardens in October. It added that there would be a public consultation later this year prior to submitting a formal planning application.
However, with tickets due to go on sale in two months’ time, Birtwistle said it was too late for any meaningful discussion. “It is consultation in the style we are getting used to, which is ‘we decide what we are going to do, then we’ll tell you,’” he said.
“My definition of consultation is that you say what you’re thinking of doing, you offer a series of options and you ask people what they think about them. Then it goes to elected members to make the decision.”
Allen had no objection to the idea of selling tickets but wished there had been an opportunity to inform the public and debate the issue properly.
“What they are saying is ‘we’re going to do a consultation and the tickets went on sale yesterday,’” he said. “That sort of thing puts people’s backs up, so you stand less chance of bringing the public with you.
“It’s human nature. If I tell you that a decision has been made and that it’s going to happen whether you like it or not, the chances are that you will rub against it.”

How are you going get around London Olympic 2012?

2012 transport chiefs to outline their plans to Assembly

As a Spyns client, all your transport arrangements are taken care of. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the view. With over thirty venues being used for the 2012 Olympic Games, getting around London on your own or as a group can be a mind boggling hassle. Check out our website and tours, and let us take you on a stress free Olympic holiday.
How are plans for transport during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games shaping up?  Will the network cope with the extra pressure, and are concerns that controversial ‘Games lanes’ will have serious knock-on effects on traffic congestion and pedestrian safety being addressed?
The Assembly’s Transport Committee will tomorrow question senior representatives from the key agencies responsible for getting athletes, spectators and Londoners around during the Games about 2012 transport plans.
Guests at tomorrow’s hearing will be:
  • Hugh Sumner, Director of Transport, Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)
  • Garrett Emmerson, Chief Operating Officer, London Streets, Transport for London (TfL)
  • Richard George, Director of Transport, London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Tomorrow’s meeting is the second of two public sessions as part of the Committee’s investigation into 2012 transport.  At a hearing on 3 November 2010 the Committee discussed issues relating to Olympic transport plans with borough, business and passenger representatives.
The Transport Committee meeting will take place on Wednesday, 12 January from 10am in the Chamber at City Hall (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).   Media and members of the public are invited to attend.   The meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
Notes to editors:
  1. The Olympic Route Network consists of special ‘Games lanes’ installed on parts of the road network for use by around 80,000 members of the Games family.
  2. The Committee heard at its meeting on 3 November that controversial plans for restrictions and special traffic lanes as part of the Olympic Route Network may have serious knock-on effects on congestion, business and pedestrian safety.
  3. As well as investigating issues that matter to Londoners, the London Assembly acts as a check and a balance on the Mayor.
