London 2012 athletics watch: Majestic Mo shows he's a future marathon man

BEST OF BRITISH
Mo Farah's burgeoning credentials as a serious contender in the marathon when he has done with his track ambitions at next year's Olympic Games were enhanced again yesterday when he won on his debut half-marathon in New York.
Not only did Farah beat a world-class field that featured eight runners who had bettered 61 minutes but his time of 60min 23sec smashed a British record by 36 seconds that had stood to the nation's finest marathon man, Steve Jones, for 25 years. Only two Europeans have ever run faster and the fastest of those by only five seconds.

Farah, working with American training partner Galen Rupp, succeeded in taking the finishing kick out of Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam and beating him in a final, 200 metres sprint. Rupp was third.
'We knew Gebre had a big finish so we worked hard together but still could not get rid of him. I felt all right with 400 to go and just went for it,' said Farah, who holds British records at 3,000 and 5,000 on the track and 10km, 10 miles and half marathon on the road.

BEST OF THE REST
The world cross country championships in Spanish resort Punta Umbria was the usual East African testimonial - Aldershot teenager Charlotte Purdue, in 14th, was the first European to finish in the senior women's race and that was Britain's best for seven years.
But at least it threw up some names new to Europeans. Imane Merga, 22, who held off four pressing Kenyans to win the senior men's race, was one.

Another was Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor, 18, who was only fourth in the Kenya national championships but won the world junior title by leading from gun to tape.

THE WEEK AHEAD
The UK finals of the Aviva Sportshall finals, an event that has been the first step to the Olympics for stars such as Mark Lewis-Francis and Kelly Sotherton, are next weekend in Birmingham.
