London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony - How it all happens

With months of build up for organizers, years, hours, minutes and seconds of training for athletes, like all Olympic Games, London Olympic Park will put a show to let the world know IT HAS BEGUN!!!

opening_ceremony_torchThe Olympic torch is lit in Olympia, Greece, and will have travelled for 70 day, across all nations competing, and through 8,000 torchbearers to light the famous Olympic Flame. Once the Olympic Flame is lit, it ignites the fire in an Opening Ceremony watched by a third of the world population. With the ground rumbling and the air shaking, a multimillion dollar fireworks display will concludes the ceremony. It is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to see it in person and experience the real festivities of the Games.
The Opening Ceremony starts a celebration of not only the world’s top athletes, but of music, dance, and culture. The ceremony typically commences with the raising of the host country’s flag as the national anthem is performed. The act that follows is a display of the host countries history and culture, symbolized by dance, singing, and music.

opening_ceremonyThe traditional phase of the ceremony is started with the “Parade of Nations” in which all the athletes are introduced into the stadium, country by country, holding their national flag. As originators of the Olympics, Greece has a special and place and leads the parade, with the host nation marching in last.
Once countries have entered, the president of the Organizing Committee declares the games open.
The Olympic flag then enters the stadium horizontally and is hoisted to the sound of the Olympic Hymn. It is then circled by a flag bearer from every nation competing, embracing the unity and spirit of friendship of the Games.

It would not be a complete ceremony if the Olympic torch was not passed from athlete to athlete, country to country, where it is finally given to the host nation to light the Olympic Cauldron.

Organizers of the 2012 London Olympics have signed a licensing deal with Universal Music Group.

Codyplay is set to be the main act for the Opening Ceremony.

Universal Music will have exclusive rights to release London 2012-branded music. The deal announced Monday includes compilation albums, composing, publishing, and recording of Olympic-related music between now and the games.

Universal will also advise London organizers on all aspects of music at the games.
London officials say it's the first time an Olympic organizing committee has signed such a deal with a music company.

The London organizing committee says "the diverse nature of Universal Music Group's labels and artists will provide a rich talent pool for the games in 2012."

Coldplay Offered “Opening Ceremony” Gig For 2012 Summer Olympics

Coldplay set to play at Olympic Opening Ceremony
Getting tickets to the Olympic Opening Ceremony will be tough, with only 80,000 seats at Olympic Stadium and an expected 2 million people in London for the Games, demand will definitely over shadow supply. An extra 2 billion people are expected to watch the Ceremony worldwide. That makes for a third of the world’s population. This will be the hottest seat of 2012 as London puts on the greatest show on earth. At Spyns, we are a tour company who prides ourselves on offer premiere luxury guided tours. Our Olympic Tours have been in high demand, with our 5-Day Opening Ceremony Tour a favourite. There is only limited Hotel space in London during the games so my advice is to get in quick. If you would like more information/detailed itineraries on our luxury 4, 5, 7, and 10-Day tours feel free to contact me at henry@london-olympiad.com.
The official song at the 2012 Olympic Games in London may be sung by Coldplay should the band receive and accept the invitation to perform. According to a committee insider, the band would perform a specially penned song to open the Olympics to a crowd of more than two billion people.
“Chris is at the top of the list to front the official record. He’s a huge star and a British musical icon, with an international profile. We’re pulling out all the stops to get hold of him, ideally with the rest of Coldplay involved, too.”

The deal is far from closed with Muse and Joss Stone also in the running for the honor of opening the event on July 27, 2012

London today broke the world record for completing an Olympic stadium.
Construction of the landmark venue was declared finished today as the last piece of turf was laid by Olympic officials.
It has taken only 1,000 working days to complete the 80,000-seat venue in Stratford at a speed that was hailed as showing the capital's readiness to stage the "greatest show on earth".
The final £486 million cost came in £10 million under budget.
As an International Olympics Committee delegation made their eighth visit to the capital today to check on preparations, Mayor Boris Johnson said the breakthrough gave London a huge advantage over other host cities such as Barcelona, Sydney and Athens. Mr Johnson said: "This is yet another fantastic milestone in the preparations for London 2012. The faultless construction of the stadium, on time and under budget, is a shining example of how London is primed and ready to host the greatest show on earth.
"The real joy of being so far ahead is that, unlike any other host city, we are already able to focus on securing the legacy we are so determined to deliver from the Games." Some work remains to be done, such as laying the running track. But this has been deliberately delayed to prevent it being damaged when giant cranes arrive to erect gantries for the opening and closing ceremonies. The Games will begin on Friday July 27 next year.
IOC member Frankie Fredericks, a four-time silver medallist sprinter, was given the honour of laying the final piece of turf, less than three years after work began in May 2008.
The IOC was given further reassurance when the Olympic Delivery Authority, which has overseen the construction work at the Olympic Park, said the sports infrastructure would be finished in July.
Built and designed respectively by Sir Robert McAlpine and architectural practice Populous - the team behind Arsenal's Emirates ground - the stadium has employed 5,000 workers from 240 British businesses.
The last of 360 rolls of turf, grown in Scunthorpe, was laid today to complete the 9,000 square metre infield area. The running track - a blue surface by Mondo- will be laid later this year by organiser Locog. In its place is a temporary Tarmac surface resistant to the cranes that will lift into place stage sets for the opening ceremony.
History will associate the Olympic stadium with two controversies: its original bid book budget of £240 million has more than doubled though that figure was never seen as realistic.
The ODA have also been criticised for spurning the chance four years ago to install retractable seats over the running track to make it more attractive to football clubs.
Last month the post-Games future of the stadium was secured when West Ham were handed the long-term tenancy.

London 2012 Olympics: Games ceremony will be anything but a horror show with Frankenstein director in charge

Golden moment: Oscar winner Danny Boyle is the
artistic director for the London 2012
Olympics opening ceremony

Spyns clients that are coming on our tours are very excited about the opening ceremony. With each Olympics the host country trying to out-do the pervious host, in this case London wants to beat the magnificent show of color and culture Beijing put on in 2008. Created by Oscar winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog millionaire) the Opening Ceremony starts at 17:30 on July 27, 2012. If you would like to come along with Spyns on a luxuary tour that you will never forget, email me at henry@london-olympiad.com for details of our 4,5,7,and 10 day tour packages.

It’s getting closer all right, the anticipation is ratcheting up daily. This week, the velodrome in the Olympic Park was unveiled to the press.

Ahead of time, under budget, neatly undermining all those cynical instincts we reached for when anticipating how the country would humiliate itself in the preparation for hosting Olympic Games, the scale and beauty of the place left those who attended catching their breath.

The 250-metre piste consists of 54km of Siberian pine shipped in from Archangel, shaped at a German sawmill and affixed into position by 360,000 nails hammered by a team of a dozen carpenters working non-stop: just to repeat the details of its construction is to swoon. No wonder those who will actually ride there are counting down the days.

Yet, oddly, the piece of news this week which most whet the appetite about what lies ahead came not from Stratford but from a place not readily associated with sport.

The new stage version of Frankenstein opened at the National Theatre to ecstatic reviews. It features an intriguing casting trick: one night Benedict Cumberbatch plays Frankenstein while Jonny Lee Miller tackles the good doctor’s monstrous creation; the next they swap parts.

What a brilliant idea, the critics all agreed. And what a show it is. One we have come to expect of the director Danny Boyle.

With one of his movies, 127 Hours – the follow-up to the award-laden Slumdog Millionaire – in the running for Best Picture at Sunday night’s Oscars, Boyle is absolutely at the peak of his powers. Right now, he can do no wrong.

And the good news is, it is he to whom the organisers of London 2012 have entrusted the single most significant role of the whole caboodle: he is to direct the opening ceremony.

Never mind Mark Cavendish, riding off in the road race, the first event of the London programme. Never mind Jessica Ennis, hoping to sparkle as much on the track as she does on the cat walk.

Never mind Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins and Victoria Pendleton, expected to dominate the new velodrome as they did the one in Beijing. There is no doubt it is Boyle who is under the most pressure to deliver a result.

So far the director has wisely kept his counsel about his intentions – if he has yet formulated any. And a glance at his output gives little clue as to what we might anticipate.

There is nothing within his movies that qualifies as typically Danny Boyle. Some involve musical set pieces. Others don’t feature a note. Some have vibrant crowd scenes. Others are claustrophobic solo tours de force.

Some are thrillers, some funny, some supernatural, some futuristic: this is a director, it seems, who can turn his hand with equal facility to any genre.

That said, there is plenty in his movies which he would rather not reprise at the ceremony lest it be seen as unhappy comment on the London Games.

The desperate search for a bit of decent weather, perhaps, that was explored in Sunshine. Or the length of time those wishing to apply for tickets are obliged to engage with the official website (127 Hours).
Not to mention, through the gloriously revolting lavatorial set pieces in both Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire, the quality of the public facilities.

As he has no doubt discovered in his preliminary discussions with the organisers, Boyle will have neither the budget nor the scale of cast that made the Beijing opening such a jaw-dropping spectacle.

With a cast of 15,000, the first number alone there featured 2008 soldiers hammering away at drums. He knows he will not be able to call on such manpower. Not least because after the latest round of defence cuts they aren’t that number of troops left in Britain.

To reflect austere times, the director will instead have to rely on his own ingenuity. Plus, for the pyrotechnics, a couple of roman candles and a sparkler left over from Bonfire Night.

Working out what he might include, it is probably easier to list what we would rather he ignored. Please let’s not have any chirpy dancing pearly kings. No beefeaters, either, or bowler hats or London bobbies.

After the debacle that was the British contribution to the Beijing closing ceremony, let’s hope Boyle avoids exploding London buses, tone-deaf X Factor winners and superannuated hard rockers.

Plus, it would be good to keep the gymnastic tableaux symbolising hope, tolerance and the grand communion of the human spirit to a minimum.

Indeed, the more you think about it, the more you realise that Boyle would be best sticking to the one area of spectacle at which the country has long excelled.

Build a stage at one end, turn the Olympic Stadium into a mini Glastonbury and feature our finest bands playing their way through their greatest hits. If nothing else, after half an hour of listening to Radiohead, the crowd will be so depressed they will do anything to cheer themselves up.

Well, it’s one way to sell those tickets for the synchronised swimming they haven’t managed to offload on Azerbaijani competition winners.
