London Olympics - Biggest 2012 promise 'has not been delivered'

Do you want to go to the Olympics in London? Don’t have tickets? It doesn’t matter!! There are a range of free events and London is going to be alive as the XXX Olympiad starts off on July 27th next year.

Click here to chat with us live online to find a tour that suits you best www.london-olympiad.com.If you would like more information/detailed itineraries on our luxury 5, 7, and 10-Day tours feel free to contact me at info@london-olympiad.com.

Now that the venues are on track to be ready and most of the tickets are sold, the biggest 2012 issue, for me, in the next few months is the failure of the Games to increase participation in sport.

www.london-olympaid.com
This was the biggest promise of London's bidding campaign. And let's face it, it's not happening.

We are not seeing a massive boom in participation. The 2012 campaign slogan is falling flat on its face.

This week, I have been in Newham, the poorest borough in London where the Olympic Park has been built.

Obesity is so bad in this part of London that doctors call in their patients as soon as they hit 40 for checks on their fat levels.

Despite having more young people living in the borough than most areas in the country, the level of sports partipation in Newham has been very low in Government surveys in recent years.
So the closure of a swimming centre at the heart of the area is causing real anger.

Locals say it's an astonishing decision when the Olympics are supposed to be encouraging people to take up sport.

So, when 2012 ramp up their celebrations on 31 December with fireworks in central London, the Atherton Leisure Centre at the heart of the Olympic borough will be shut down.

Newham Council says the pool has to be closed because of ceiling problems which will cost too much to repair.

The Mayor, Sir Robin Wales, has promised to replace it with a new centre.

But Michelle Turner, who is running the campaign to save the pool, is not convinced the borough has the money to deliver a new pool.

Although the Olympic Aquatic Centre has been built in Newham, residents says it is a 40-minute walk away and won't be open for some time.

I've also been talking to Trevor Blackman, who runs sports training programmes in Newham.
He says Government public spending cuts have meant he is only running one programme in the borough now.

All this in the place where the Games really need to make an impact.

So, who is taking responsibility for this lack of progress in participation?

Lord Coe, the 2012 chairman, takes some of the hits because he is the man who made the promise in his emotional speech to the International Olympic Committee in Singapore.

But it is also the Government, London Mayor Boris Johnson as well as local authorities and the national governing bodies of sport who need to step up to the mark here.

We've had the catalyst of the Olympics for six years now but Britain's sporting landscape isn't changing like we were promised it would.

Demand for Olympics tickets soars
Demand for Olympics tickets could outstrip supply with one in five adults saying they plan to buy tickets for the London 2012 Games.

But while 70% believe the Olympic Games will boost the UK economy, only 39% believe this will outweigh the cost of hosting the spectacle.
Organisers are releasing 6.6 million tickets to spectators in Britain, with a deadline of April 26 for applications to join the ballot.
Outdoor advertising agency Kinetic Worldwide said the Games could be "massively over-subscribed", with 10 million Britons saying they plan to apply for tickets.
A further 2.2 million tickets will be available to overseas spectators and organisations sponsoring the Games.
In the capital, 36% of people say they plan to buy tickets, with just 23% saying tickets are too expensive. Organisers say one quarter of tickets will cost less than £25 and 90% will cost less than £100. The best seats at the opening ceremony will cost £2,012.
More than half of Londoners say they are now excited about the Olympics, up 10% since October to 51%. Across the UK 40% of those surveyed said they are excited.
More than half of those planning to go to the Olympics say they are not sports fans but consider it to be a "once in a lifetime" experience.
James Copley, of Kinetic UK, said: "Our research suggests the level of anticipation and interest in attending the Games is growing and London will see a surge in visitors at the top end of expectations."

London Olympics 2012: £20,000 fine to deter touts as tickets go on sale

Fine for ticket touts has been increased to
20,000 pounds for the Olympics
If you travel with Spyns (active travel specialists), we have organised Olympic Tickets to your favourite sports sessions, booked luxury suites in the best hotels, and arranged some very special private tours in and about London for our clients. If you would like to join the growing community of happy Spyns clients and see London 2012 in style and with ease, then have a chat with us live at www.london-olympiad.com

More than six million tickets for next year's London Olympic Games go on sale online on Tuesday, when organisers will be crossing their fingers that demand will be sufficient to threaten a website meltdown without actually delivering one.

Ticket sales will be vital to the success of London 2012 if it is to raise the projected £2bn from the private sector required to pay for the staging of the Games. A quarter of the Games's revenue is hoped to be raised through ticket sales alone.

The government has already signalled the importance of Tuesday's release by announcing an increase in the fine for ticket touting from £5,000 to £20,000. The organisers are planning to tackle cyber-crime with a range of measures. "By increasing the fines for touting, we are sending a clear message to criminals and prospective criminals that it is not worth their while and they are not welcome," said the home secretary, Theresa May

Police have taken the unusual step of contacting known ticket touts in advance of sales going live. Assistant Commissioner Chris Allison, the national Olympic security co-ordinator, said: "We do not want our Games blighted by touts. My officers are working now to make the Olympics as hostile an environment as possible for them, and increasing the penalty will help by sending a clear warning.

"We have sent out letters to those who may try to illegally sell Olympics tickets to warn them that their card is marked and we are watching."

For the most sought-after events, an automated, random ballot will be used to ensure a fair allocation of tickets. Applicants will be notified whether or not they have been successful by 24 June. Prices will start at £20, with the most expensive seat at the opening ceremony going for £2,012.

Sports enthusiasts are being warned to double-check that they are buying tickets from the official website before they provide their credit and debit card details. The London organising committee bought up hundreds of domain names to try to prevent overseas operators from selling unauthorised tickets. Only the official website, its travel partner Thomas Cook, and hospitality providers Prestige Travel and Jet Set Travel are authorised to sell tickets.

"This is the greatest show on Earth. It is our objective to make sure it doesn't degenerate into the greatest scam on Earth," said Lord Coe, the chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (Locog). "This is a very complex area, but it is our objective to make it as hard as possible for this process to be subverted."

Paul Deighton, Locog's chief executive, said that while there was the possibility of tracking the buyer of every ticket, a "commonsense" approach would be taken to ticket holders distributing them among their family and friends. The six-week sales period should avoid the need for panic, with ticket applications being taken until one minute to midnight on Tuesday 26 April.

Winning the right to buy some of the 6.6 million London 2012 Olympic Games tickets will be a keenly sought-after prize next month, so bookmark this Telegraph guide to work out which of the 645 sessions you wish to apply for and which category of seat you can afford.

How do I buy tickets?
You can apply for tickets from between March 15, 2011 to April 26, 2011. Because tickets are not sold on a first-come, first-served basis, the orders can be submitted at any stage during the 42-day period. There is no advantage in applying early.

How do I submit my orders?
You can do this online at www.tickets.london2012.com or by filling in a paper form and posting it. Forms will be available from Lloyds TSB banks and through Bank of Scotland in Scotland, from March 15, 2011. In Northern Ireland, the forms will be available from public libraries.

How do I pay?
Online payment is exclusively by VISA debit card, VISA credit card or pre-paid card. Paper forms can be paid for by cheque or postal order as well as VISA.
Payments will be taken from successful applicants between May 10 and June 10. This is the same whether you are using VISA, cheque or postal order.

Is there a limit to how many tickets I can apply for?
Yes, each session has a ticket limit. This is clearly shown in the guide which follows. The most popular sessions, such as the opening ceremony, are limited to four tickets per order.
Most sessions have a limit of six, but some sessions held in big stadiums have a limit of 20.

What happens if the session I applied for is oversubscribed?
Organisers will conduct a ballot.

Can I have a second chance for my selected session at a different price point if it is oversubscribed?
Yes, you can indicate on the application whether you want to be considered for higher, lower, or both higher and lower price categories, as well as the category being ordered, for every session you for whcih you apply.
Organisers will determine the priority of ticket allocations – whether they ballot from the lowest price point or from the highest price point after the ticket process has closed.

What is included in the ticket price?
As well as the Olympic session, the ticket you purchase includes VAT and also a Travelcard for travel in zones 1-9.

Which events are most popular?
Track cycling, swimming, gymnastics and weightlifting will be highly sought after, mainly because these sports are played in smaller venues.
The opening and closing ceremonies, along with the athletics finals and beach volleyball, are also very popular.

How much will tickets cost?
Ticket prices are listed in our guide and range from £20 to £725. The top- of-the-range ticket price is £2,012 for a small number of the very best opening ceremony seats.
Organisers say that there will be a small number of opening ceremony seats at a price of £20.12.

What are my chances of getting tickets in each price category?
Organisers say that each price band has approximately the same number of seats available. Two notable exception to this are the opening and closing ceremonies, where the bulk of tickets are in the middle price bands.

How many tickets are available?
The public application process will involve 6.6 million of the total 8.8 million tickets available at the London 2012 Olympics.
A further two million Paralympics tickets will be sold in a similar process from Sept 9, 2011. Tickets for the London 2012 Festival (part of the Cultural Olympiad) will be available from October 2011.

Can I return tickets that I do not want?
Once you have apllied for the tickets you want, you cannot then cherry pick which tickets to keep, and you will be charged for all of the tickets you have been successfully allocated.
However, organisers will set up an online ticket exchange next year, where any unwanted tickets can be offered for sale (at face value) to other consumers.

Are the tickets available to people outside Britain?
Yes, the tickets and application process will be open to all of the European Union. People in the UK and designated European countries can apply through www.tickets.london2012.com

Do children pay the same prices?
At more than 220 lower-demand sessions the cost of the ticket is the same as the child’s age (up to age 16) on July 27, 2012). This £16 cap will also be offered to seniors aged 60 and over.

Are there any other avenues for buying tickets?
Organisers have already sold off a small percentage of tickets to premium ticket wholesaler Prestige Ticketing, which is packaging high-end corporate hospitality deals, while Jet Set Sports is packaging high-end deals for overseas markets which include luxury accommodation.
In addition, sponsor Thomas Cook is providing UK short break packages of accommodation, transport and event tickets for the Games from £99 up to £6499.
More ticketing information is available at www.thomascooksport.com/London-2012-Games and www.tickets.london2012.com

London 2012 Olympics: Iran's national committee threaten to boycott Games over 'racist’ logo

Hot topic: Iran's Olympic committe is
unhappy with the London 2012
At Spyns we won’t be boycotting the Olympics. We have created three impeccably planned 5, 7, and 10 day tours. No matter what your favourite sport is, we have a created and planned a luxury tour for you. Our 10 day Opening Ceremony adventure starts with the Opening Ceremony on the 27th July 2012, and will include tickets to watch Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe battle it out for the 100m Freestyle final. For more information check out our website http://www.london-olympiad.com/

Iran’s national Olympic committee claims that the official London 2012 logo is racist and is threatening to boycott next year’s Games unless it is changed.

Hot topic: Iran's Olympic committe is unhappy with the London 2012
Iranian Olympic president Mohammad Aliabadi wrote to the International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge saying the logo was “revolting” because it spelt out “Zion” – a reference to the country’s enemy, Israel.

Aliabadi threatened that any neglect of the issue by the IOC “would affect the participation of several countries, especially Iran, which insists on following principles and values.”

A spokesman for the IOC said: “We are looking forward to London staging a great Games and all countries being represented there.”

Iran is the first country to threaten to withdraw their participation at the London Olympic Games and the issue is being taken seriously because of the sensitivity of the ongoing tensions between Iran and Israel.

The emotionally-charged letter, which was addressed to the IOC several days ago, stated: “Unfortunately, we all are witnessing that the upcoming Olympics ... faces a serious challenge, definitely spawned out of some people’s racist spirit.

“The use of the word Zion by the designer of Olympics logo .... in the emblem of the Olympic Games 2012 is a very revolting act.”

Iran sent a team of 55, including three women to the Beijing Olympics and competed in a variety of sports including wrestling, judo, weightlifting, taekwondo, basketball, swimming, as well as track and field.

At the Beijing Games one of the Iranian swimmers Mohammad Alirezaei withdrew from the men’s 100 metres breaststroke competition claiming he was ill, but the presence of Israel’s Tom Be’eri in the same heat was originally believed to be the reason.

But yesterday Olympic officials were trying to downplay the row. The IOC spokesman said: “The logo represents London 2012 and nothing else.”

London Olympic Games organisers said they were surprised the complaint has been raised now after the design, at a reported cost of £400,000, was launched nearly four years ago following testing and consultation.

However immediately following the logo’s public release in 2007 there were claims, by some critics, that it represented a sexual act.

The London organisers had no comment over the threat to boycott the Games.
